Written PieceThis painting was created due to its ability to relate to the thesis statement. As stated in the Dear Reader section, the purpose of this multi genre collection is to demonstrate that how someone reacts to adversity proves who they are as a person, and this painting displays a perfect metaphor for this theme. This flower is growing on the pavement, where obviously there is not sufficient nutrients to support its development; a flower requires fertile soil that concrete does not provide. Similar to a little person trying to live in a world built for tall people, the flower has had to find new ways to grow in a harsh, unforgiving environment. The reason pavement was chosen as the “soil” for the plant to grow in was to demonstrate that this plant was capable to adapt to new and difficult surroundings in order to thrive, much like Jim Abbott without his right hand, from the informational text. The choice of grey is also a dark colour, symbolising the difficulty and struggle the plant went through to grow and prosper, where the bright colours of the flower show its beauty and success. The metaphor in the painting is relating the flower to anyone enduring any kind of adversity, whether it be a stressful test coming up at school or the loss of a family member. The painting represents someone struggling through a problem but finding their own unique way of coping and, eventually, learning how to thrive in the situation they were initially dealing with. |
“It is your reaction to adversity, not the adversity itself, that determines how your life’s story will develop.” |
